Bow hunting is the sport I choose to get back to nature. I have been bow hunting for over 20 years and like nothing better then getting in my stand and listening to the sounds of the forest. It is not the sport for everyone though as it takes a lot of persistence and patience. The main key to bow hunting is to remember you are now in "their" territory and they know it better than anyone. I have 2 sons that are die hard hunters also but can't get the bow hunting thing down, they can shoot well and hunt anything else well but don't have the perseverance to sit still. When bow hunting say deer they know everything of their surroundings and most important pay attention to whats going on around them.
Lets just say you have an itch on your nose and you go to scratch it anything that is around you that you haven't seen approaching yet is now gone. The correct way to do this is to move so slow it takes 5 minutes to get to your nose, If you can't accomplish this stay home because deer see flashes of movement like you wouldn't believe but if you do it slowly they will not detect it. I have watched my sons squirm and move around in a tree from 300 yards away, as this might be Ok for gun hunting it won't fly bow hunting. If I can see the movement from 300 yards away they can also.
When bow hunting you have to have your senses toned up as well, you'd be surprised at how many times over the years I looked down and all of a sudden there were deer right underneath me with no shot present because now I'm not ready! You have to be aware at all times and see everything....I mean looking into the brush to see the glimmer of an antler or the little black spot that wasn't there 5 minutes ago that is now a nose, The name of the game is to see them first! An old hunter told me once when I was just a young lad starting out hunting that "For every whitetail you see 7 others have already seen you and are long gone" I have lived by this rule my whole hunting life and swear by it. So just remember this...anyone can bow hunt just like anyone can play poker but to good at it you have to be consistent, and what I mean by this is that anyone will luck out and get their deer once in a while but the really good, conscientious hunters and poker players are going to get their prize every time.
